Second Quarter

12/3/10- Buck is the luckiest dog alive. He has found his way out in through though times, but this time he got out with pure luck. He could of died a cold slow death with his team and Hal, Charles, and Mercedes. Even though John Thornton told them to not cross the ice because it was getting warm, and the ice was starting to melt. They didn't believe him and so that's why they all died. Buck is lucky that he stayed with John Thornton. If it wasn't for John to step in while Hal was beating Buck up, then Buck would also die a cold slow death.

11/26/10- Buck and his companions are now with Hal, Charles, and Mercedes. They bought Buck and his team from the half-breed because they were about to head of on a hiking trip, and they needed dogs to pull the sled. First of all, they have no idea what they are doing. They are over loading the sled with junk and a over supply of everything. They have so much stuff that the sled is too heavy for the dogs to pull, even though the dogs use every bit of energy in them to pull it, and the stuff on the sled falls off every once in a while they are on the trail. Also, there has been a lot of drama between these them and this frustrates the dogs. They don't know what they are doing, and they are running out of food very quickly, so they better use their brains because if they keep going along the trail like this, they could soon die.

11/19/10- Its amazing how many people Buck has gone through. First he was raised by Judge Miller and grew up living at his house. Then he was taken by Manuel and sold to another man. Between this man and the man in the red sweater Buck was traded between three different men. Then after the man in the red sweater showed Buck the law of the club, he was sold off and taken to the cold north with Perrault and Francois. He stayed With Perrault and Francois, but they bet on him during a gamble and lost. He was then given up to the Scotch half-breed man, and later on, him and his team was sold to Hal, Charles, and Mercedes. This is a lot of people Buck has been with and "Like other men, they passed out of Buck's life for good".

11/12/10- Dave was a good hard working dog, and I felt bad when Scotch half-breed killed him. Even though i felt bad about it, I understand why Scotch half-breed did it. Dave was dieing and this made him really weak. He couldn't even get up anymore. All he did was walk alongside of the sled, so there wasn't any use in him for the team. In a way, it was good that Francois put Dave out of his misery because everyday, Dave would suffer to move and eventually he would die a slow and painful death. Its just sad that Dave had to die this way.

11/5/10- I can't believe that Buck killed Spitz. The fight was out of control. Even though Spitz had the advantage because he attacked Buck while he was off guard, Buck still ended up killing Spitz. Spitz attacked Buck and almost killed him with all the bites and all the times they rolled on top of one another. Spitz seriously injured Buck and Buck felt every bit of pain because his body wanted to give up, but Buck knows that that the second he hits the snow, he will be attacked by all the dogs in the circle. This is when Buck's true wolf senses comes in. He starts to trick Spitz and ends up breaking his two front legs. Spits tries to fight back, but his broken legs and Bucks quick attacks weakens him, so he falls down to his death.

10/29/10- Spitz is now getting out of hand. He is taking this "being dominant" thing out of hand. When the wild dogs were attacking the group, Spitz took this opportunity and attacked Buck when he least expected it. Buck was trying to fight off two different dogs, and when he least expected it, he felt something (Spitz teeth) bite into his neck. This shows how muck of a coward Spitz is because he can't face Buck one on one. Another moment when Spitz shows how cowardliness is when he attacks Buck when Buck is being chased by Dolly. Spitz sees another opportunity and goes for it. He attacks Buck, but fortunately Francois got there in time before Spitz caused major damaged to Buck. Francois started to whip Spitz with his lash and Buck just stood back and enjoyed it. Spitz received the worst whooping out of everyone that day, but he deserved it.

10/22/10- Spitz is an evil dog. He takes every opportunity he has to show his dominance to Buck. Every little moment that he has, he would show his teeth or growl at Buck. Buck has been doing a good job of keeping out of trouble with Spitz, but I understand why Buck attacked Spitz when he found Spitz in his hole. Buck is tired from traveling all those miles and is extremely hungry from not eating properly. After Buck eats his small dinner, he goes to

10/29/10- Spitz is now getting out of hand. He is taking this "being dominant" thing out of hand. When the wild dogs were attacking the group, Spitz took this opportunity and attacked Buck when he least expected it. Buck wa
his sleeping hole and finds Spitz in it. This is why I understand why Buck attacked him. Spitz went to Buck's hole to show that he is the dominant one and can do whatever he wants. Buck is tired of this and now is going to teach Spitz a lesson.

10/15/10- I enjoyed reading about Buck's struggle in getting use to the way of life of the cold north. He has learned that sleeping buried under the snow is much warmer than just sleep out on top of the snow. He has also learned how to run a sled because whenever he pulled the sled with the other sled dogs, they bit him or shoved him whenever he was off track or running to slow. He learned very quickly for a dog that was basically thrown into the north without any knowledge of the north. The thing Buck is going through reminds me of my NOLS course this past summer. I did many of the things Buck did in the book such as, trail blazing, eating rations, and traveling everyday. I can relate to the things Buck is going through and feel what he is feeling.

What I'm Thinking of- I enjoy reading Jack London's writing style because he puts so much detail in a little amount of pages. I could read about ten pages and someone could of died or something to that extreme could of happen. I enjoy this because I'm a slow reader, and when I read ten to fifteen pages, I feel as though I read a lot due to the fact that so much happens in a few pages. Another thing that I enjoy from his writing is that he always ends chapters with a climax which makes me want to keep on reading. These small climaxes get better throughout the endings of each chapter which leaves me on the edge of my seat while I read.
